Kashmir, at a glance

Kashmir is often described in clichés — paradise on earth, Switzerland of India — but the truth is simpler: it’s the only part of India that feels like Central Asia, with Mughal gardens, wooden mosques, Persian-style cuisine, and a landscape that swings between mirror-still lakes and treeless alpine passes. Most travellers cover Srinagar plus two valleys (usually Gulmarg or Sonmarg, and Pahalgam) in a relaxed week. Add another day or two for Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, or Aru if you want quiet meadows instead of tourist hubs.

Top places

Six places that capture different sides of Kashmir

Most trips combine Srinagar with two or three of these valleys. Pick by season: snow in winter, meadows and rivers in summer.

Shikara boats on Dal Lake with the Pir Panjal mountains, Srinagar

Srinagar — The Lakeside Capital

Dal Lake houseboats, shikara rides, Mughal gardens, the old city’s wooden mosques, and the night markets. Almost every Kashmir trip starts and ends here.

Snow meadows and pine forests of Gulmarg with the Apharwat peaks

Gulmarg — The Ski & Gondola Town

Asia’s highest gondola, alpine meadows in summer, and India’s best ski slopes from December to March. Two hours from Srinagar.

Riverside town of Pahalgam in the Lidder Valley, Kashmir

Pahalgam — The Lidder Valley Town

Riverside walks, log cabins, pony rides to Baisaran, and the gateway to the Amarnath trek. Less crowded than Gulmarg, with longer green seasons.

Alpine meadows and snowy peaks at Sonmarg, gateway to the Thajiwas glacier

Sonmarg — Meadow of Gold

Alpine meadows, the Thajiwas glacier, river rafting on the Sindh, and the gateway road to Ladakh. Closed by snow Nov–April.

Yusmarg meadow surrounded by pine forests and the Pir Panjal range

Yusmarg — The Quiet Meadow

A wide-open meadow ringed by pines and the Pir Panjal range, an easy day trip from Srinagar. Picnics, short walks, almost no crowds.

Lidder Valley and Aru Valley meadows beyond Pahalgam in Kashmir

Aru & Lidder Valley — Beyond Pahalgam

Drive 12 km past Pahalgam for meadows along the Lidder river, log-cabin homestays, and the trailhead for the Kolahoi glacier and Tarsar Marsar trek.

Suggested itinerary

Pick the route that fits your time

Kashmir is compact — most places are within 2 to 3 hours of Srinagar — but mountain roads mean you should never rush.

5 days

The classic taste

Srinagar (2 nights) · Pahalgam (1) · Gulmarg (1) · back to Srinagar. Covers the headlines without rushing.

7 days

The full circuit

Srinagar (2) · Pahalgam (2) · Gulmarg (1) · Sonmarg day trip · Srinagar (1). Time to slow down and add a meadow day.

8–10 days

Kashmir + Ladakh

5 days Kashmir + drive to Leh via Sonmarg, Kargil, Lamayuru. The classic Himalayan road trip. June to early September only.

Best experiences

Six things worth building the trip around

  1. Sleep on a houseboat on Dal Lake and wake to a shikara at dawn.
  2. Take the Gulmarg gondola to Apharwat Peak for Himalayan views.
  3. Walk along the Lidder river in Pahalgam at sunset.
  4. Eat a wazwan thali in Srinagar’s old city.
  5. Drive the Srinagar–Sonmarg–Zoji La road in summer.
  6. Visit the Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Pari Mahal) on a slow afternoon.

🏠 Where to stay

Srinagar has heritage houseboats on Dal and Nigeen lakes, boutique hotels in Rajbagh and Sonwar, and a growing list of restored homes in the old city. Pahalgam and Gulmarg have hotels in every category from family-run guesthouses to luxury resorts. For Aru, Yusmarg, and Doodhpathri, expect simple homestays and cottages — part of the charm.

🚗 How to get around

Fly into Srinagar (SXR) from Delhi, Mumbai, or Bangalore. Hire a local taxi or driver for the whole trip — self-drive isn’t practical and shared cabs are unreliable for time-sensitive plans. Roads to Sonmarg, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam are smooth in summer; check conditions in winter (Dec–Mar). Internet and phone work fine; Jio and Airtel are most reliable.

🍲 What to eat

Kashmiri cuisine is rich, slow-cooked, and meat-heavy — but the bakeries and vegetarian sides are equally good. Worth trying:

  • Rogan Josh
  • Yakhni
  • Gushtaba
  • Kashmiri pulao
  • Nadru (lotus stem)
  • Kahwa tea
  • Sheermal & bakirkhani breads
  • A full wazwan if you have a group
Travel tips

Small things that make a big difference

Do this

  • Book houseboats and hotels well ahead for June–July and Dec–Jan.
  • Carry warm layers even in summer — mornings and evenings stay cool.
  • Use Jio or Airtel postpaid SIMs; many prepaid SIMs don’t work in J&K.
  • Buy saffron and walnuts from government emporiums to avoid fakes.

Avoid this

  • Don’t commit to shikara, pony, or shawl prices without confirming before boarding.
  • Don’t plan Sonmarg or the Ladakh road outside late May–early October.
  • Don’t skip travel insurance — weather closures and altitude issues are real.
  • Don’t overload the itinerary; one valley a day is the right pace.
FAQs

Common Kashmir questions

How many days are enough for Kashmir?

Five to seven days are ideal for a relaxed first trip covering Srinagar plus two valleys (typically Pahalgam and Gulmarg). Add two more days if you want to include Sonmarg or quieter meadows like Yusmarg or Aru.

What is the best time to visit Kashmir?

April to October is the green-and-flowers window; tulips peak in early April, summer is warmest in June–July, and autumn colour arrives mid-October. December to February brings snow — Gulmarg becomes a ski destination and Srinagar runs on bukharis (wood stoves).

Is Kashmir safe for tourists right now?

Tourism in the Valley has been steady for several years and Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sonmarg see large numbers of visitors. As anywhere, check current travel advisories, avoid border areas, and stay on the main tourist routes. Most travellers report a normal, very hospitable trip.

Can I combine Kashmir with Ladakh in one trip?

Yes — the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh drive (about 2 days with a Kargil overnight) is one of India’s great road journeys. The road is open roughly June to early October. Outside those months, fly into Leh separately.

Is Kashmir good for honeymoons and families?

Very much so. Houseboats, gondola rides, pony treks, shikara picnics, and easy short walks work for couples and families alike. Children handle the altitude in Gulmarg and Pahalgam comfortably. The Ladakh extension is harder for small kids.
