Uttarakhand, at a glance

Uttarakhand splits cleanly into two halves: Garhwal in the west (Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie, Auli, the Char Dham route) and Kumaon in the east (Nainital, Corbett, Ranikhet, Kausani, Munsiyari). Most first-time visitors stick to one side per trip. Garhwal is best for spirituality, yoga, and high-altitude treks; Kumaon is gentler, with lake towns, tea estates, and wildlife. Both share the Himalayan backdrop but feel very different on the ground.

Top places

Six places that capture the range of Uttarakhand

Mix and match across Garhwal and Kumaon depending on whether you want river towns, hill stations, wildlife, or mountain views.

Ganga river flowing past Rishikesh with the Himalayan foothills

Rishikesh — Yoga & Adventure

The world’s yoga capital sits where the Ganga leaves the mountains. Ashrams, evening aarti at Triveni Ghat, the Beatles Ashram, white-water rafting, and the Lakshman and Ram Jhula suspension bridges.

Har Ki Pauri ghats and evening Ganga aarti at Haridwar

Haridwar — Sacred Ganga City

One of India’s seven holy cities and the gateway to the Char Dham. Evening Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri, the Mansa Devi temple ropeway, and a different rhythm an hour from Rishikesh.

Naini Lake surrounded by hills and the town of Nainital

Nainital — The Lake Town

Kumaon’s busiest hill station, built around the emerald Naini Lake. Mall Road walks, boat rides, the Naina Devi temple, and quick day trips to Bhimtal, Sattal, and Naukuchiatal.

Colonial-era Mussoorie with the Mall Road and Himalayan foothills

Mussoorie — Queen of Hills

A Raj-era hill station 35 km from Dehradun, with cool air, the Mall, Camel’s Back Road, Kempty Falls, and Landour just above — a quieter heritage cantonment with cafes and old churches.

Sal forest and grasslands of Jim Corbett National Park along the Ramganga

Jim Corbett — Tiger Country

India’s first national park, famous for tigers, elephants, and the Ramganga river. Stay near Dhikala or Bijrani zones, book safaris in advance, and pair with a Nainital stop.

Snow-covered slopes and oak forests of Auli with views of the Garhwal Himalayas

Auli — Ski & Garhwal Views

Oak and conifer slopes above Joshimath, with India’s best ski runs (Jan–Mar) and unbroken views of Nanda Devi. Reach by road and cable car from Joshimath; best paired with Rishikesh.

Suggested itinerary

Pick a route that matches your time

Distances in Uttarakhand look small on a map but mountain roads are slow — a 100 km drive can take 5 hours. Plan fewer stops, longer stays.

5 days

Ganga & ashrams

Haridwar (1 night) · Rishikesh (2) · Mussoorie (1) · Dehradun depart. Spirituality, yoga, river time, and one hill station.

7 days

Garhwal classic

Haridwar (1) · Rishikesh (2) · Mussoorie (1) · Joshimath–Auli (2) · return. Rivers, hill stations, and a taste of the high Himalayas.

10 days

Kumaon + Garhwal

Delhi · Corbett (2) · Nainital (2) · Mukteshwar or Kausani (1) · Rishikesh (2) · Haridwar (1). Wildlife, lake towns, and Ganga side by side.

Best experiences

Six things worth building the trip around

  1. Stand on the steps of Har Ki Pauri at sunset for the Ganga aarti in Haridwar.
  2. Take an early-morning yoga class on the ghats of Rishikesh.
  3. Ride the Auli cable car for the Nanda Devi panorama.
  4. Go on a dawn jeep safari in Corbett’s Dhikala or Bijrani zone.
  5. Boat across Naini Lake and walk up to Naina Devi temple at golden hour.
  6. Sip cafe coffee on the Landour heritage walk above Mussoorie.

🏠 Where to stay

Rishikesh ranges from riverside ashrams and yoga retreats to boutique hotels in Tapovan. Haridwar has heritage guesthouses near the ghats. Mussoorie and Nainital have everything from Raj-era hotels to homestays in nearby Landour, Ramgarh, or Mukteshwar. Corbett means jungle resorts near the Dhikala or Bijrani zones — book early. Auli has a handful of hotels and the GMVN resort near the cable car.

🚗 How to get around

Fly into Dehradun (DED) for Garhwal or Pantnagar (PGH) for Kumaon. Delhi is the most common entry by road or overnight train. Hire a car with driver — mountain roads are tiring and parking is tricky. The Vande Bharat train from Delhi to Dehradun is fast and comfortable. For Auli, drive to Joshimath then cable car. Char Dham routes need extra time and registration in season.

🍲 What to eat

The food is mountain-simple but full of character. Worth trying:

  • Aloo ke gutke
  • Bal mithai
  • Garhwali kafuli
  • Singhori
  • Jhangora kheer
  • Bhang ki chutney
  • Mandua roti
  • Kumaoni raita
Travel tips

Small things that make a big difference

Do this

  • Register online for Char Dham yatra before travelling May–Oct.
  • Book Corbett safari zones (Dhikala in particular) several weeks ahead.
  • Start mountain drives early — most roads close to night driving.
  • Carry warm layers for Auli and Mussoorie even in shoulder season.

Avoid this

  • Don’t plan high-altitude drives in monsoon — landslides are common Jul–Sep.
  • Don’t expect cell signal beyond Joshimath; download offline maps.
  • Don’t pack Rishikesh + Char Dham + Corbett into one week — too many transfers.
  • Don’t skip travel insurance for mountain road trips and treks.
FAQs

Common Uttarakhand questions

How many days do I need for Uttarakhand?

Five to seven days is ideal for either Garhwal (Rishikesh–Mussoorie–Auli) or Kumaon (Corbett–Nainital–Mukteshwar). Ten days lets you combine both sides without rushing.

What is the best time to visit Uttarakhand?

March to June is warm and clear in the hills, with Auli still snowy until early April. September to November is post-monsoon — lush, clean air, mountain views. December to February is great for snow in Auli and Mussoorie. Avoid heavy monsoon (Jul–Sep) in the high hills due to landslides.

Is Uttarakhand good for families?

Very much so. Nainital, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, and Corbett work especially well — boating, ropeways, river walks, safaris, easy day hikes. The Char Dham yatra and Auli ski runs need more planning but are doable with older children.

What is the Char Dham, and is it for me?

Char Dham is a Hindu pilgrimage covering Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — open roughly late April to October. It’s deeply meaningful for pilgrims but physically demanding (multi-day drives, helicopters, treks). Many travellers do just one (Kedarnath or Badrinath) on a regular trip.

How do I get to Uttarakhand from Delhi?

By road, Delhi to Haridwar/Rishikesh is 6–7 hours. The Vande Bharat express to Dehradun is fast and comfortable. For Kumaon, drive or take an overnight train to Kathgodam (gateway to Nainital and Corbett). Flights into Dehradun or Pantnagar are quickest if available on your dates.
