In short Thanjavur is where the Cholas built their masterpiece. The Big Temple, finished around 1010 CE, is one of India’s greatest buildings and still the tallest thing in town. Give it a full day, then use the city as a base for the wider Great Living Chola Temples circuit at Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram.

Why visit Thanjavur

🛕

The finest Chola temple

Brihadeeswarar — the Big Temple — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the high-water mark of Chola architecture, built entirely of granite in the 11th century.

🥁

Living art and bronze

The home of Chola bronze casting, Tanjore painting and Carnatic music — a working centre of South Indian culture, not just a monument.

🌾

Heart of the Cauvery delta

The rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, dense with temple towns, is easiest to explore from Thanjavur with a car and a driver.

When to go to Thanjavur

December to February is the comfortable window, with daytime temperatures around 22–30°C — ideal for walking the vast temple courtyard. Thanjavur sits on the hot delta plains, so from April to June it regularly climbs past 38°C, which is punishing on the open granite.

The northeast monsoon brings rain in October and November, though less fiercely than the coast. If you can time it, the temple looks its best at dawn or in the low light of late afternoon, when the granite turns honey-coloured and the great vimana throws its shadow across the courtyard.

Base yourself here

Thanjavur is the natural hub for the Great Living Chola Temples. Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram are both easy half-day trips, and Kumbakonam’s cluster of temples is under an hour away.

Top things to do in Thanjavur

01

Brihadeeswarar Temple Do not miss

The Big Temple, built by Rajaraja Chola I and consecrated around 1010 CE. Its 66-metre vimana is topped by a single carved capstone, and a monolithic Nandi guards the approach. Go early, before the courtyard heats up, and walk the full colonnade of lingams.

02

Thanjavur Maratha Palace

A sprawling complex built by the Nayaks and extended by the Marathas, with the Durbar Hall, a bell tower and a maze of courtyards. It also houses the art gallery and the great library.

03

Saraswathi Mahal Library

One of the oldest libraries in Asia, inside the palace, with a collection of palm-leaf and paper manuscripts in Tamil, Sanskrit and Marathi. A small museum displays the most striking of them.

04

Thanjavur Art Gallery

Housed in the palace, with a superb collection of Chola stone and bronze sculpture — the finest place to see the famous Nataraja bronzes up close, away from the temple crowds.

05

Buy a Tanjore painting

The city gave its name to the gold-leaf, gem-set devotional paintings still made here. Workshops around the palace let you watch the gilding and pick up a piece straight from the artist.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram

The second great Chola capital, 70km north, with a temple that rivals the Big Temple and a fraction of the crowds. Built by Rajendra Chola I to mark his campaign to the Ganges.

Airavatesvara Temple, Darasuram

The third of the Great Living Chola Temples, near Kumbakonam, smaller but the most intricately carved of the three — its stone chariot and musical steps are extraordinary.

What to eat in Thanjavur

Thanjavur eats like the delta it sits in — rice at the centre of everything, served on a banana leaf, with the temple town’s famous vegetarian meals as the main event.

Signature

Banana-leaf meals

The full vegetarian sappadu — rice, sambar, rasam, poriyal and payasam — served and refilled until you fold the leaf. The delta’s everyday feast.

Iconic

Thanjavur degree coffee

Filter coffee made with thick delta milk, poured from tumbler to dabara. The delta is coffee country and it shows.

Sweet

Thirukkattupalli halwa & adhirasam

Ghee-rich delta sweets sold around the temple — adhirasam, the jaggery-and-rice fritter, is a Thanjavur staple.

Nearby

Kumbakonam kadappa

A soft dal-and-potato curry served with idli or dosa, the signature dish of nearby Kumbakonam — worth the short trip.

Practical tips that actually help

🌅

Go early for the granite

The open courtyard has almost no shade. Dawn light is cooler and far kinder for photos of the vimana.

👕

Dress modestly

Shoulders and knees covered; footwear comes off at the temple gate, so the granite can get hot underfoot by midday.

🚗

Hire a driver for the circuit

The three Chola temples are spread across the delta. A car saves hours over piecing it together by bus.

🕒

Mind the midday closure

Like most Tamil temples, Brihadeeswarar shuts in the early afternoon and reopens around 4pm. Plan the palace for that gap.

Mistakes first-time visitors make

  • Seeing only the Big Temple and skipping Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, which complete the story.
  • Arriving in the heat of the day and crossing a scorching granite courtyard barefoot.
  • Rushing the art gallery — its Chola bronzes are the best you’ll see anywhere.
  • Trying to reach all three Chola temples by public bus in a single day.
  • Forgetting the temple closes for the afternoon and losing the middle of the day.
